Attention Soccer Players & Parents!
The British
Journal of Sports Medicine has published a research article
showing that
soccer headgear has been proven
effective in
reducing the risk of concussion in adolescent
soccer players (ages 12-17). And they showed that wearing
headgear after already sustaining
a concussion reduces the risk of having a second concussion.
The following is a synopsis of the original research article.
Soccer Headgear Proven Effective in Play
Laboratory
research sponsored by FIFA (the international soccer governing
body)
has already shown that wearing headgear decreases the risk of
concussion and
head trauma for soccer players by reducing impact forces.
Researchers at
the McGill University Health Centre in Canada collected head
injury
data on 268 adolescent soccer players (ages 12-17) during their
2006 club soccer
season. Of the 52 who wore headgear, only 26.9 percent
suffered a concussion
during the season, while the 216 who didn’t wear the gear had
a concussion rate
of 52.8 percent. Even with the large difference in sample
sizes, those results are
statistically significant.
The
researchers also found that wearing headgear decreased the
risk of a second
concussion among players who had already sustained one and
helped prevent
lacerations to the covered head areas. Lead author J. Scott
Delaney, MDCM,
said “wearing headgear does not encourage people to play more
aggressively.”
This is exciting news considering
that concussions have become so prominent in youth sports that
the Center for Disease Control and Injury Prevention (CDC) have
labeled it as an epidemic among adolescents in our
country.

2 New
Programs at THS
ImPACT Concussion program
Tenafly High School is currently
implementing an innovative program for our
student-athletes. This program will assist our team
physician andathletic trainer in evaluating and treating
head injuries (e.g., concussion). In order to better
manage concussions sustained by our student-athletes, we
have acquired a software tool called ImPACT (Immediate
Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing).
ImPACT
is a computerized exam utilized in many professional,
collegiate, and high school sports programs across the
country to successfully diagnose and manage
concussions. If an athlete is believed to have suffered
a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help
determine the severity of head injury and when the
injury has fully healed.
